Motivational Factors Associated with the Control of Diabetes

The purpose of this book is to identify motivational factors, practical approaches and strategies for facilitating and sustaining the behavioral changes required for diabetes control. Qualitative research was conducted to facilitate an in-depth analysis of the topic. A theoretical study exploring the motivational factors associated with the control of diabetes is presented. Multiple databases were accessed to obtain a substantial amount of relevant data. The data was analyzed and further studied to seek answers to the research questions within the context and theoretical framework of self-determination theory (SDT). Diabetes definition, classification and some aspects of its treatment are reviewed to highlight some elements of the general management and self-care regimes that are the drivers of the behavioral-change approach. The results indicate that there are two primary forms of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. There are several effective behavioral/psychosocial interventions available to diabetics to enhance changes in their behavior, which are reviewed in the book.
