The mitochondria are the power house of the cell and evolutionarily considered as rickettsia prowazeki which symbiosed with the cell. The mitochondria has its own DNA. Mitochondrial proteins are coded by nuclear DNA and mitochondrial DNA. Mitochondrial DNA has a maternal inheritance. The homo sapien species has a predominant aerobic metabolism and mitochondrial energetics. The homo neanderthalic species has the Warburg phenotype with anaerobic glycolytic metabolism and mitochondrial dysfunction. This forms the basis of all civilizational diseases including cancers, neurodegenerations, major depressive disorders, schizophrenia, autoimmune diseases and metabolic syndrome. They are all acquired mitochondrial diseases. Mitochondrial medicine is basically metabolic medicine as well as personalized medicine. It is the future medicine.
