Mitigation of methane emissions from landfills in Ghana

The book employs the LandGEM and LandSEM modeling tools to estimate the methane generation and oxidation rates of the abandoned Ohwim dumpsite (un-engineered landfill) in order to ascertain the dangers posed by these emissions to the residents at the location. To do this, the total area of the dumpsite is screened to know the methane concentrations. Using the dumpsite information, the methane generation rate is estimated. Also, the potential oxidation rate is simulated falling on the dumpsite data available and some estimations. From the performance of the model, a proposition is made for all abandoned and old dumpsites in Ghana to start practicing the biocover technology after the closure of the site.
