Metastatic Lesions To The Oral Cavity

The oral cavity and oropharynx are very unusual sites of systemic metastasis from primary cancers of other organs, which account for only about 1-2% of oral malignant tumours. Most of these involve the jaws rather than the oral soft tissue. Metastasis to the head and neck are infrequent but in 20¿35% of cases may be the first indication of an otherwise occult malignancy.Because of their rarity, metastatic tumours to the oral region are challenging to diagnose. Therefore, they should be considered in the differential diagnosis of inflammatory and reactive lesions that are common to the oral region. Various advanced imaging techniques like Immunohistochemical analysis and molecular diagnostics aid in confirming the metastatic lesion along with determining the primary origin of the tumour. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the prognosis is generally poor with an average survival time of 7 months.Since metastatic lesions to the oral cavity are rare and not enough cumulative data is showcased, this library dissertation aims to review various metastatic lesions to the oral cavity
