Man has always been on the lookout for material that could accurately reproduce missing teeth or structure. The introduction of dental ceramics as restorative material produced restorations with esthetics comparable to natural teeth and an average person may find it difficult to distinguish between the two compared to esthetic restorations composite and acrylic resins, the dental ceramics are stronger, wear resistant and impervious to oral fluids and absolutely biocompatible with long term color stability and ability to be formed into precise shapes. Although it has some drawbacks like susceptibility to brittle fracture, the dental ceramics because of their huge potential, is still a fast growing area in terms of research & development.
