Beschreibung

This 500-page volume presents the first comprehensive English-language documentation of mass housing in the German Democratic Republic. Bringing together architectural history, urban planning, construction technology, and typological analysis, it examines the development of prefabricated systems and large-scale housing estates between 1953 and 1990. At the core of the publication is a catalogue of the most important East German building series and construction systems. Detailed drawings, floor plans, technical descriptions, and historical photographs document the evolution from early large-block construction to the WBS 70 system and later urban adaptations. Housing supply must be understood as one of the central architectural and urban tasks of the GDR. Beyond its political dimension, the book demonstrates how serial building methods shaped the built environment of East Germany on an unprecedented scale and generated a distinct architectural culture of prefabrication. Almost four decades after the end of the GDR, Germany once again faces the challenge of realizing affordable housing through serial and industrialized construction. The models, systems, and planning methods developed in East Germany provide valuable historical experience for current debates on housing shortages, standardization, and building efficiency. At the same time, the housing estates and prefabricated buildings of the GDR are increasingly being recognized as part of Europe’s cultural heritage. Through extensive documentation of building types, urban concepts, and realized projects, this publication contributes to a reassessment of East German mass housing as an important chapter in twentieth-century architectural history.
