MANAGING THE PUBLIC SECTOR: GHANA'S PERSPECTIVE

The public sector plays a vital role in the administration of any Government. It manages and controls national and critical services of countries and serve as the channel between government and its citizens. In recent years, Governments of countries have been under pressure to improve public sector performance and at the same time contain expenditure growth. Countries are challenged with providing more public services with less public spending. Those who are in charge of managing the Public Sector services need to have good knowledge and understanding of management and policy issues that government and private organizations face, and the influence of these services on the local communities that they serve. There is no blueprint for enhancing public sector efficiency. In Ghana, like many other countries, public sector management is designed to improve the quality and efficiency of services delivered by public organizations. The Public manager interprets the public policy to implement public services by the use of best management practices to achieve the most desirable outcomes for the interest of the public.
