Sickle cell disease is a genetic, hereditary disease affecting the red blood cells. It is an abnormality of the hemoglobin present in the red blood cells which in affected subjects is replaced by a hemoglobin called "S" or "sickle cell". This hemoglobin is capable of deforming the red blood cell, giving it a sickle-shaped appearance called "sickle cell".
