MANAGEMENT OF IMPLANT FAILURE

The success of implants is mainly based on the concept of osseointegration since it gives better understanding of the bone response and improvement in bone loading concepts. Like in every medical intervention, biological complications occur which may lead to implant failure and removal. Despite growing popularity dental implants are not immune to setbacks in terms of both long- and short-term failures. Improved osteotomy techniques, proper surgical sterilization and impeccable tissue handling are considered to be factors in managing implant failure perioperatively. Excessive heat generation, contamination of implant surface, insufficient torque and improper healing may lead to implant failure. But the failure can be prevented by a number of procedures and following proper surgical protocols. Use of ultrasonic devices, piezo surgery and lasers are most recent advances in managing a failing implant.
