Local Drug Delivery in periodontics

The periodontal treatment aims to eradicate gingival inflammation, eliminate bleeding, reduce periodontal pocket depth, arrest destruction of soft tissue, and bone by removing the bacterial deposits in the form of plaque and calculus from the tooth surface.The traditional surgical and non surgical approach is not able to completely eliminate the bacterial infection at the base of the pocket and within the gingival tissue because both areas are inaccessible to periodontal instruments.To overcome this, antimicrobial agents can be used both systemically or locally that serves to enhance the treatment protocol and acts as an adjunct to mechanical therapy.These systemic antimicrobial agents might cause drug toxicity, acquired bacterial resistance, drug interactions etc.Thus to overcome these shortcoming use of local delivery of antimicrobial agents are extensively being advocated. hence; this book aims to enumerate the history, indications, options and recent advances in local drug delivery in periodontal practice.
