Lipid profile and blood pressure in lean and overweight canines

The objective of the present study was to compare the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure in 60 canines from the Small Animal Clinic of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, of which 30 were lean and 30 were overweight. The blood samples collected were processed by the photocolorimetry method and blood pressure was measured by the oscillometric method. The results showed hypertriglyceridemia in 16.67% of the overweight group, whereas 46.67% of the lean group and 90% of the overweight group showed hypercholesterolemia. Twenty percent of the lean group recorded elevated blood pressure values and 50% of the overweight group recorded these values. Triglyceride and cholesterol levels were significantly higher in the overweight group (p<0.05), while there were no differences in systolic blood pressure values. The Chi-square test determined an association between lean and overweight canines with the variables triglycerides, cholesterol and systolic blood pressure.
