Levobupivacaine (LVB) is an amino- amide local anesthetic agent as it is a pure S-enantiomers of bupivacaine. LVB exerts its pharmacological action through reversible blockade of neuronal sodium channels. The levorotatory isomers were shown to have a safer pharmacological profile with less cardiac and neurotoxic adverse effects. Clinical studies have shown that epidural levobupivacaine promotes sensory and motor block similar to bupivacaine with lower toxicity. These characteristics make levobupivacaine attractive for obstetric anesthesia since pregnant women have a high toxicity risk due to physiological adaptations.
