Learning cricothyrotomy

Cricothyrotomy is a rare but simple to perform lifesaving procedure. The aim of our study was to evaluate the learning of cricothyrotomy by procedural simulation as well as the learner's satisfaction with this learning method, the trainer and the learning environmentMethods:We conducted a prospective observational descriptive and analytical study including 34 intensive care residents. After demonstration of the cricothyrotomy technique on a skin-covered sheep trachea, all learners made 2 attempts to perform it.Results: There was a significant improvement in learning the technique After the session, all learners felt they were able to perform cricothyrotomy without hesitation in a real emergency situation. All learners were interested in learning other techniques and skills through simulation.Conclusion: Procedural simulation using a skin-covered sheep trachea appears to be an interesting alternative for learning cricothyrotomy.
