Etymology and Conceptual Field Leadership comes from the English word leader [archive], the leader, not the peer-appointed leader, of a political party in Britain, and the suffix -ship. Broadly speaking, it can be defined as "the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute to the effectiveness and success of the organizations of which they are members".2 It refers to behaviours that can be recognized in the person who performs the "function of the leader". Leadership can also be understood as the ability to create a World to which others want to belong. This approach is based on the work of researchers Boltanski and Thévenot on the theory of Worlds. Leadership is then the ability to diagnose and understand the current World, to conceive and embody the desired World and finally to build bridges for other actors to join the desired World.
