"Il y avait une fois" un riche marchand qui avait trois filles. La cadette était surnommée "La Belle Enfant". Caché au fond d'un bois sombre, se trouvait le château de la Bête, un monstre d'une grande laideur. Un jour, le marchand cueillit une rose dans le jardin de la Bête.
