In the future, IOT is expected to combine different technologies and enable new applications by connecting physical objects together supporting intelligent decision making. The paper starts with a general overview of IOT, then an overview of IOT enabled technologies, protocols and applications is given. A detailed summary of the most upto-date protocols is provided, application issues which help researchers and developers understand the protocol suite to deliver desired functionalities is discussed. A brief summary of some of the key IOT challenges and related research is also provided. Moreover, the relation between IOT and other emerging technologies including big data analytics, cloud computing and fog computing is provided at the end.
