Introduction to Concepts, trends and issues

The book places tourism within a historical perspective, but recognizes how the later invention of the wheel made it possible to travel longer distances. There is focus on the relationship between tourism and geographical resources, vis-à-vis the importance of spatial distribution to the study of tourism. Concepts associated with tourism are explained, albeit recognising that tourism impinges on a number of other disciplines. There is a special focus on tourism in Africa in general, and Zimbabwe in particular, the former ¿Jewel of Africä. African countries are urged to invest in their attractions, transportation, accommodation, and modern technology, as well as to address the continent¿s image, particularly among the major tourist source markets. Despite the many positive impacts of tourism, the book warns against the sector¿s negative economic, socio-cultural, and environmental effects, generally due to overcrowding. Countries are thus encouraged to formulate tourism policies and develop tourism plans along the principles of sustainability.
