INTRAVENOUS FLUID THERAPY IN ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY

Intravenous fluid therapy plays an important role in management of patients undergoing surgery due to its direct impact on the intraoperative hemodynamics and postoperative recovery. Intravenous fluid management is a common medical task and safe unambiguous prescription of fluids is a required training outcome for all doctors. The goal of intravenous fluid therapy in surgical patients is to maintain adequate tissue perfusion and oxygen delivery and in most cases, provide a fluid vehicle for drug administration. This book highlights three main phases of intravenous fluid therapy- preoperative, intra operative and postoperative fluid therapy. It also deals with the commonly used intravenous fluids in maxillofacial surgery along with the complications associated with IV therapy. Special considerations of intravenous fluid therapy in pediatric and geriatric patients will also be discussed here.
