International Law on the Rights of the Child

The implementation of socio-economic rights in developing countries like Nigeria depends on the political and legal will to ensure the enjoyment of these rights. International Law on the Rights of the Child with Special Reference to Nigeria examines the enforcement of International Standards in Nigeria with emphasis on children¿s right to health and education. The book takes a closer look at the conceptions of childhood, relevant provisions of the United Nations Charter on Children's Rights, the African Charter on the Rights of the Child, and how these apply to the Nigerian child. Despite Nigeriäs ratification of relevant International Laws, domestic legal provisions and court decisions limit her children¿s entitlement to the benefits of these agreements. Social and political problems like inadequate government funding and harmful cultural practices have also posed a threat to the welfare of children. Respecting and enforcing ratified treaties on children¿s rights will enhance the standard of living for Nigeriäs children and the country in general.
