Implant Supported Maxillofacial Prosthetics

Maxillofacial prosthodontics is a specialty of dentistry which deals with the rehabilitation of patients with acquired and congenital defects of the head and neck region. These range from minor to major functional disabilities combined with cosmetic disfigurement.The development of titanium dental implants by Professor P.I. Branemark led to the refinement of bone-anchored prostheses for the face and adjacent structures. Maxillofacial Prosthesis defined by the current Glossary of Prosthodontic Terms ¿ GPT 81 as any prosthesis used to replace part or all of any stomatognathic and/or craniofacial structure. The branch of Prosthodontics concerned with the restoration and/or replacement of the stomatognathic (jaws) and craniofacial (facial) structures with prostheses that may or may not be removed on a regular or elective basis.
