Immunoparasitology

Parasites elicit a wide range of immune responses in their hosts. Different parasites evoke different types of immune responses. Some are countered by both humoral and cell-mediated responses, while others are best contained by one or the other. In general, protozoan parasites tend to induce Th1 responses, while helminth worm infections are handled by Th2 responses. All parasitic diseases can be considered as inflammatory ones each with its own particular characteristics associated with the nature of the parasite itself and the ways in which it evades the immune response. So, this book aimed to help medical and medical laboratory students to understand how parasitic infections are controlled. Besides, the book gives the students idea and knowledge about advanced topics related to immunity against parasitic infections. The book covers topics related to basic immunology, immunity to parasitic infections and advanced immunoparasitology. These topics are: overview of general immunology, overview of immunoparasitology, parasitic evasion mechanisms, pathology and immunopathology of parasitic infections, immunity to protozoan parasitic infections, immunity to trematodes.
