Heterocyclic Libraries: Synthetic Aspects and Their Applications

Heterocyclic chemistry is one of the intriguing branch of organic chemistry and heterocyclic compounds constitute the largest and most varied family of organic compounds. Heterocyclic compounds offer a high degree of structural diversity and have enormous potential as the most promising molecules as lead structures for the design of new drugs. They are organic compounds containing at least one atom of carbon and at least one element other than carbon, such as sulfur, oxygen or nitrogen etc. within a ring structure. They are widely distributed in nature and are essential to life as they play a pivotal role in the metabolism of all living cells. They are common structural units in marketed drugs and in medicinal chemistry targets in the drug discovery process. They have enormous potential as the most promising molecules as lead structures for the design of new drugs because of the unique ability of the compounds to imitate the structure of peptides and to bind reversibly to proteins.
