Herbal Treatments for Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs)

The global burden of disease has driven a broad shift from communicable and nutritional causes to non-communicable diseases. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the most prevalent cause of human morbidity and mortality all over the world. Since the beginning of human civilization, herbs have been an integral part of society with an estimated 2.3 billion people still depending on herbal medicine. In the face of the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and the cost of therapy, there is the need to look for alternative but effective treatments that includes herbal medicines usage. There is growing evidence showing that many herbal medicines and their active ingredients contribute to the standard therapy for CVDs. Howbeit, most herbal remedies used today have not undergone detailed scientific studies hence further research is necessary to elucidate their pharmacological activity.This book aims to summarize the current progress of promising herbal medicines for various CVDs by determining herbal medicines used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases; identifying the specific plants used and to determine whether orthodox medicines were used concomitantly by patients.
