Hepatoprotective activity of Bixa orellana Lin. against ethanol

The book focuses on the herbal drugs and its emerging use over the allopathic medicines with lesser side effects. It focuses mainly on liver protecting herbal medicine with no side effects on other organs. Different parts of Bixa orellana plant possess many pharmacological activities like antiseptic, antibacterial, and antiemetic effects, used for fever (antipyretic), buccal tumors, jaundice, protozoan, helminths and also had platelet anti-aggregant activity. Twigs and leaves of Bixa orellana (Bixaceae) are claimed to be used traditionally as a herbal drug in north Kerala in treatment of liver disorders as an emollient and seeds have been proved to possess hepatoprotective activity as also used in many marketed herbal formulations.
