Halo-chamigranes from Laurencia pinnatifia

Most of the algal research efforts to-date have been concentrated on the constituents of red algae. The rhodophytes (red algae) comprising about 4000 species have been of great interest due to their fascinating secondary metabolites which have been opened a new field for synthetic chemists. In Pakistan, research in the field of marine natural product chemistry has been carried out to a limited extent. The fact that Pakistan has a long coastal line and a rich marine flora and fauna has motivated us to start the research in this direction. Most of the research on red algae has been carried out collected from Mediterranean Sea. It is interesting to investigate the chemical constituents of red algae from Arabian Sea. The research results embodied in this monograph is on the marine red alga Laurencia pinnatifida since the genus Laurencia Lamour. is the only one among all of the red algal genera which is investigated all over the world due to its fascinating metabolites.
