GIS studies on distribution and ecology of Indian Garcinia spp

The primarily problem in the study of the genus Garcinia is the limited regional awareness of the crop. Although many species in W. Ghats and NE. Himalayas are established, the occurrence of Garcinia in other parts of India and its relative distribution has not yet studied. The reports regarding the occurrence of species dates early 19th century and the updates are very little to study the present scenario of Garcinia in India. The limitation in the awareness of the genus could result in endangering or loss of a perhaps economically highly important crop. Further, being an under-utilised crop, the information on current distribution of Garcinia is unclear. The habitat aspects of Garcinia and the possible domains of Garcinia predicted using GIS, can be used for further surveys and conservation studies.
