General Anaesthesia for Thoracotomy in cattle

In the study of adjunct action of xylazine hydrochloride, diazepam, midazolam or acepromazine maleate as preanaesthetic to guaifenesin ¿ketamine hydrochloride induction and isoflurane maintenance, it was found that diazepam provided smooth induction and shorter time for unassisted standing compared to other premedicants. Cardiopulmonary changes like reduction in rectal temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate and mean arterial pressure compared to preanaesthetic mean values were noticed in IPPV during general anaesthesia for thoracotomy in cattle with traumatic pericarditis. Haemoglobin, packed cell volume and total erythrocyte count were also significantly reduced when values compared to their respective preanaesthetic mean during IPPV.
