Fundamentals of Safe Motherhood

Since the launch of safe motherhood initiative (SMI) in Nairobi, Kenya in 1987, the talk about maternal mortality, skilled attendants at birth, and emergency obstetric care has been directed at doctors, nurses and specialists. The trained have been talking to themselves and little has been done in terms of health literacy; to bring those at risk of maternal death (mothers and prospective mothers) on board. This book therefore serves to close this yawning gap by providing fundamental information relevant to the control of maternal mortality. It has been written in a layman''s English that any woman or man with good elementary or secondary education can read and understand. This book should be especially useful to pregnant women including teenagers from all cultures, undergraduates and applicants, and parents of young adults. Also public health practitioners as well as general and family health physicians will find it a handy gift for their patients.
