Environmental and Risk Education in Venezuela

Venezuela in recent decades has been affected by torrential rains that annually have left hundreds of deaths and families homeless. This phenomenon is not exclusively due to meteorological causes but to institutional management failures, social injustices and short-sighted attitudes of the population towards risk.An NGO called Geografía Viva has set itself the goal of achieving successful pilot experiences in three communities in the Venezuelan Andes, taking as its goal that the local schools and their neighbours should have participatory environmental risk management plans that they themselves manage, on the understanding that they should not expect that foresight and response action to possible emergencies will come exclusively from the generally overflowing official bodies of Civil Protection, Fire Brigades and other similar bodies
