Encouraging Enthusiastic Readers

Some people love to read, others hate to read. There are those who read only when necessary, or those who spend hours lost in books. Some devour novels, while others voraciously digest newspapers, periodicals, blogs, and other forms of electronic media. What is a "reader for pleasure?" And, more importantly, what common factors during childhood enhance the development of readers for pleasure?
