Effects of Action bitters on the sperm quality of albino mice

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Action bitters on male fertility by assessing its effect on sperm quality (sperm morphology and sperm count). In order to monitor the health condition of the mice used, the effects of the action bitters on their body weights and the mortality rate were assessed weekly. 30 male albino mice were equally divided into six groups. Each group of mice was administered for 35 days with different concentrations of the action bitters (0-10%) according to their body weights. On the 36th day, the mice were sacrificed and sperm was obtained from the cauda epididymis. There was an inverse relationship between the body weights and the concentration of Action bitters. Mortality rate was high in mice group administered with 100% action bitters. The sperm count result decreased significantly (p<0.05) when compared with control. Different structural abnormalities were observed in the study which includes: tailless head, headless tail, pin head, double head, double tail and folded sperm. These results show that Action bitters has adverse effects on sperm quality thus may result in infertility.
