Documentation of wild plants in Muthumalai Hillock, Coimbatore

The present attempt is aimed to find out the ornamental importance of wild plants. In search to reduce commonly used ornamental plants. The plant collection, preservation and documentation of ornamental potential are noted through intensive field survey in Muthumalai hillock and nearby gardens. So far the floristic data on the study area is not yet reported followed by this current investigation on floristic diversity reveals presence of 124 species belongs to 109 genera of 55 families. Among them 72 species has immense ornamental potential they are: 14 - Arboretum, 07- Avenue trees, 02 - Carpet beds, 09- Edges, 19 - Flower beds, 07 - Ground covers & lawn , 16 - Hedges, 06 - Pergola, 03 ¿ Bio fence, 10 - Shrubbery, 05 - Topiary, 08 - Trellis,14 ¿ Trophy. This study also reveals 14 International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red listed plants. Due to various ornamental potential, the floristic wealth should be consider for improving particular ornamental character (like size of flower) by using horticultural techniques.
