Beschreibung

With contributions in English and German

The windows of the West Choir in Naumburg are among the most significant examples of stained glass in European Gothic Cathedrals. They have long been recognised as an integral part of this famous architectural ensemble, but have always taken a back seat to the Statues of the Founders and the Rood Screen by the workshop of the ‘Naumburg Master’. This changed, in particular with the extensive conservation project dedicated to the stained glass of both choirs from 2017 to 2020. In the course of the conservation and accompanying art-historical research, not only was the extraordinary quality of the glazing confirmed, but numerous new insights were also gained into 13th-century manufacturing techniques. These included details of the materials, design and workshop processes; and the effects of the major restoration phases of the 19th and 20th centuries. The extensive findings and observations were deepened and evaluated in an interdisciplinary scientific ‘Project for the Art-historical and Technological Examination of the Stained Glass Windows in the West Choir of Naumburg Cathedral (KUTEC)’. This volume presents the results of this work.

  • Insights into the interactions between the medieval stonemasons’ lodge and the glass workshop
  • Detailed research into the history of restoration
  • Richly illustrated publication on a significant example of medieval stained glass
