Destructive Recurrent Landslides: Marakwet Lagam Escarpment

The Lagam escarpment landslides in Kaben Location of Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya, are not only recurrent but are highly cataclysmic and destructive. The first known landslides along the escarpment occurred during the 1961 El-Nino, when a major rainstorm hit the area around Kiptungu. The landslides not only denudated Embosumer River but left huge scattered boulders in the surrounding farmlands. Four decades later another catastrophic landslide hit Kaben Location again! A decade later (on Sunday of 19th April 2020) heavy rains pounded the area again causing massive landslides and mudslides that involved many rivers and streams. Twenty six lives were lost as well as homes, schools and farmlands washed away. A preliminary study was undertaken to investigate causes of these landslides and subsequently suggest possible preparedness measures. Data was collected using secondary data analysis and presented in the form of ground photographs, satellite images and discussions made thereon. Thus, the recommendations made and mitigation measures envisaged in this book will draw positive action from the area residents and all concerned parties in Kaben Location, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya.
