Designing User Interfaces Embedded in Everyday Objects for Rich Interaction.

The last decade has seen a surge in networked devices in domestic settings. Despite their promise to simplify how we live and interact with them, many of these devices have been noted to instead introduce control interfaces that often fail to account for users' everyday habits and physical spaces. This book investigates an alternative: embedding control interfaces into familiar, physical objects to build upon the natural interactions humans already have with their environments. Through a structured process of requirements gathering, user observation and prototyping, this work documents the opportunities and challenges of integrating interactivity into domestic spaces. It demonstrates how designers can exploit the secondary affordances of everyday objects to create scalable and intuitive tangible user interfaces. By analysing trade-offs involving gesture mapping, multimodal feedback and object utility, this book expands our understanding of interaction paradigms.
