Though India ranks as the world¿s largest milk producer, the per capita milk consumption is one of the lowest in the world. Sound milk procurement is important for millions of small milk producers and hundreds of dairy plants. Milk cooperatives link both the milk producers and the dairy plants. The research system in livestock sector is a conglomeration of institutions (public, cooperative and non-government sectors). It is not possible for these institutions to critically analyze the knowledge acquired and practices adopted by the individual DCS member. It is worthwhile to analyze the present day livestock development programme in the light of various components of advanced dairy production technology.
