Dumb canes are one of the most important groups of ornamental tropical foliage plants. Dieffenbachia maculata (Lodd.)Sweet of the Araceae family, originates from the tropical regions of Brazil.The necrotic white creamy spots, located at the base or at different levels in the shoots and leaves near the midrib were observed.The percentage of abnormality revealed the toxic effects of D. maculata and the different chemical components were also identified through the GC-MS analysis. Present study gave important information about the toxicity of plant due to the high percentage of the anomalies observed in the chromosomes which may be utilized for the development of chemotherapeutic drugs.
