Heterocyclic compounds are those cyclic compounds in which one or more of the ring carbons are replaced by another atom. The non-carbon atoms in such rings are referred to be as hetero atoms. The most common hetero atoms are nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur, but other atoms such as boron, phosphorus, or silicon can also be members of heterocyclic rings. Enormous number of heterocyclic compounds is known and increases rapidly. Heterocyclic compounds have a wide range of applications, but are of particular interest in medicinal chemistry and industrial application. The history of heterocyclic chemistry began in the (1800), in step with the development of organic chemistry.
