Containerisation and Eastern Mediterranean

Containers can be transferred from one mode of transport to another without being opened. Due to this facility of containers, intermodal freight transport system has developed enormously. The containers; easily can be transported among the ports as transhipment. This property of container transportation, emerge ports to invest and increase their capacity in an intensely competitive environment, to become a ¿Regional Relay Hub Port¿ and/or a ¿Hub Port¿ and grab a share of this action. Mediterranean; is in an important geographical location, where important trade routes between Europe-Asia and North America-Asia are passing. Eastern Mediterranean has the highest transshipment rate in the world. Cyprus and the Crete ports, which are geographically well located in the middle of the Eastern Mediterranean, will have the chance for becoming regional container transshipment hub ports in the near future.
