Communicating Food Emergencies and Famine Disasters

Disasters, in particular the food emergencies and famine disasters have become one of the largest threats to public health on the African continent today. This is through food insecurity and the resultant vulnerability on the famine victims. African famines have multi-faceted causes and results which vary from environmental, social, political, policy and weather factors hence the need for good communication for a multi sectoral approach in famine prevention and mitigation becomes even more apparent. This communicators' brief manual guideline therefore attempts to highlight the inclusion of good communication programming and media publicity as a strategy and also as some of the appropriate tools in responding to the ever-increasing menace of famines and subsequent food insecurity. This is to enhance the much needed national and household resilience.
