Commercial Banks and Priority Sector Lending in Karnataka

Commercial banks, especially public sector banks, have substantially contributed to the economic growth and development of the Indian economy by providing efficient services and low-cost means of funds, particularly to weaker sections of society, through priority sector lending. Since 1969, banks in India have made remarkable progress in coverage, diversification, and business operations, and they act as a catalyst for socio-economic transformation through their nationalization.The study is confined to Bangalore rural district in the state of Karnataka. The main focus of the present study is on the role of commercial banks in priority sector lending since their nationalization. Additionally, the study examined the growth and performance of commercial banks in Karnataka, specifically in Bangalore rural district. Furthermore, it analyzed the evolution of the priority sector lending policy in India, which is the focal point of the present study.
