CBCT IN ORTHODONTICS

The introduction of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) specifically dedicated to imaging the maxillofacial region heralds a true paradigm shift from 2D to an alternative 3D which compensates for the shortcomings of other 3D imaging options such as radiation dosage, cost and localized approach to data acquisition and image reconstruction. The present work provides an overview of the imaging principles underlying this technology which identifies dental applications and in particular focuses on the emerging role of CBCT in dentistry.This newer advancement provides a complete 3D view of the maxilla, mandible, teeth, and supporting structures with relatively high resolution, lesser magnification and low radiation exposure to the patient.
