Bisphosphonates and Dentistry- Role and Management

Our patients' health may be vitally affected if we proceed with dental treatment without the knowledge of the medications they are taking. The newest medications to result in devastating dental effects are the bisphosphonates, which are used for various ailments( e.g., osteoporosis). Unfortunately there is only little data on how to proceed with invasive therapy in patients with bisphosphonate treatment. The purpose of this book is to provide: 1. Risk estimates of developing Bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis of jaw( BRONJ) 2. Comparisons of the risks and benefits of medications related to osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) in order to facilitate medical decision-making for the treating physician, dentist, dental specialist, and patients 3. Guidance to clinicians regarding: a. the differential diagnosis of BRONJ and MRONJ( exposure to antiresortive or antiangiogenic drugs) b. BRONJ prevention measures and management strategies 4. Role of MMP in BRONJ. This book not only provides information about the side effects of bisphosphonates but also lay emphasis to the beneficial role of this drug other than its main function of bone loss inhibition (e.g.,host modulation, as an analgesic etc.).
