BIOMATERIALS IN ORTHODONTICS

The biomaterials used in the oral cavity should possess certain qualities. It should be non-toxic, possess reasonable strength, hydrolytic stability, high purity and sterilizability. It should also possess reproducible quality and be resistant to tarnish and corrosion. Some of the biomaterials used by an orthodontist are brackets, arch wires, bands, elastics, adhesives and etchants, cements, impression materials, and micro implants. Almost any procedure performed in a dental office and clinic requires the use of dental material choosing the right material for any procedure is a bit like choosing a dress or shirt. It has to meet a number of requirements ¿ color, cost, fit, comfort and have the ability to take the wear and tear of use and cleaning. It is essential to understand materials to make sure the right one is selected, used properly and cared. The principles of use and evaluation of the material properties will not change because the laws of chemistry and the biology of the human body control them.
