Biological wastewater treatment

Biological wastewater treatment using aeration lagoons removes soluble and insoluble organic pollutants, nitrogen, phosphorus and insoluble inert material from domestic and industrial wastewater. The design of aerobic lagoons depends mainly on the BOD5 removal rate, the influent temperature, the level of turbulence in the lagoon, the oxygen transfer rate, the concentration of nitrogen, suspended solids and the presence of algae. This text introduces the fundamental concepts of biochemistry and kinetic models of biodegradation followed by biological wastewater treatment, the design of aerobic, sedimentation and stabilization lagoons, including the calculation of design parameters, kinetics, aerator power, lagoon sizing, aerator power, sludge production and performance by this type of biological treatment.
