Esther Fernsby has been critically depressed ever since 4th grade, and no one knows why. The true story of her distress has never made its way off her tongue before. Fei Chen is a 15-year-old Chinese American who has been missing for six years. Only Esther holds the story to Fei's disappearance, for the two girls had been best friends for years.

Ruby Matthews and her mother have been on the run for three years with no home, nothing to live on, and only a car for a source of shelter. Their only hope is to find a being called the Master, who lives in the center of the earth and supposedly possesses the power to save the lost.

Through an arduous tunnel to the earth's center, a mysterious science teacher, and an encounter with the Master himself, these three girls discover that even when it seems as if all hope is gone, the Master is above and beyond what human beings can ever comprehend, and only he holds the keys to life itself.
