In this technologically advanced world, the demand for energy is increasing day-by-day, which creates tremendous pressure on the current sources of energy; therefore, new and unconventional sources of energy have to be utilized in the upcoming decades. Along with this, the environment has also become a matter of concern owing to its vulnerability when exploiting new energy sources. Up to the present day, the major source of world energy has been fossil fuel, which puts its footprints on the environment by emitting hazardous chemicals upon burning. This threat is increasing with the increasing demand for energy, and unconventional sources of fossil fuels are going to be utilized. Unconventional fossil fuels can act as environmental pollutants because they are contaminated with a large number of impurities. The major class of these pollutants is nitrogen- and sulfur-containing compounds. Upon combustion, they produce SOx and NOx, along with CO2, which causes various environmental hazards including severe air and water pollution, global warming by exposure of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, and Additionally, when combined with rainwater, these compounds produce acid rain.
