Atypical Facial Pain - An Oral Physician's Perspective

Orofacial pain is the pain localized to the region above the neck, in front of the ears and below the orbitomeatal line, as well as pain within the oral cavity. It has a significant burden in terms of morbidity and health service utilization. Atypical facial pain is one such entity that refers to pain along the territory of the trigeminal nerve, that does not fit the classic presentation of other cranial neuralgias. Hence, its diagnosis relies on interpretation of historical data; review of laboratory studies, imaging, behavioral, social, and occupational assessment; interview and examination by the orofacial pain provider.
