Attitudinal Dimensions of Algerian Taboos and Euphemistic Strategies

This book is an original research work on the use of linguistics taboos, euphemisms and politeness strategies in the Algerian context taking into account previous scholarship from both Western and Arab sides. It discusses the major tabooed areas that exist in Algerian culture depending on the society's norms and religious standards. It is also an investigation of the individuals' attitudes towards the different taboo topics mainly sexual matters, death, females' daily issues, age and certain jobs. It also sheds light on the major euphemistic strategies that Algerian people have developed to overcome the embarrassing nature of taboos in general. These euphemistic strategies are considered as a part in the social values of the Algerian society. Finally, this research work gives a glimpse on how Algerian speakers switch towards the use of French words as euphemistic expressions to fill in the gap the absence of some euphemisms that do not exist in Algerian dialects or to express some terms that are illicit in these dialects.
