Assessing the Vulnerabilty of Indian Mustard to Climate Change

This book is covering the climate change impact on Indian mustard by using crop simulation model InfoCrop, It was successfully simulate growth and yield of mustard crop across different locations of India. Simulated yield of mustard was found to be sensitive to changes in atmospheric CO2 and temperature. Yield of mustard increased with elevated CO2 concentration, while the positive effect of increased CO2 was nullified by temperature rise. The above result supports the adverse impacts of future anticipated climate change on mustard growth and yield. An overall negative impact on Indiäs mustard farming was observed from 2020, through 2050 till 2080. Yield of both irrigated and rainfed mustard was affected by the changing climate. Spatial variation was noticed in terms of its yield loss with western and northern India being more vulnerable in term of yield reduction of the crop. Adaptation strategies like late sowing and growing longer duration variety would be helpful in preventing yield loss of irrigated mustard crop in different locations. The assessment of climate change on Indian agriculture can be more precise and provide sound basis for regional policy planning.
